As if worshipping the Christian God instead of the Roman gods invited the destruction of Rome. Augustine responded by providing the church with a framework to interpret history and reality itself from a distinctly theistic metaphysic amidst a world often antagonistic to Christian beliefs. Most of all, Augustine taught Christians what it looks like to live as citizens of the city of God when the city of man is perishing.

Phillip Cary is Professor of Philosophy at Eastern University, author of several books including The Nicene Creed: An Introduction (Lexham Press, 2023), and lecturer of popular online courses such as “Augustine: Philosopher and Saint” and “Philosophy and Religion in the West.”
Matthew Barrett is the editor-in-chief of Credo Magazine and host of the Credo podcast. He is associate professor of Christian theology at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Director of the Center for Classical Theology. He is the author of the award-winning Simply Trinity and his new book is called, The Reformation as Renewal. He is currently writing a Systematic Theology (Baker Academic).
