Thanksgiving books for children

By Elizabeth Barrett –

With Thanksgiving only a little more than 2 weeks away I wanted to share some children’s books that you can use to help your little ones understand this very special holiday. Some of these books teach the historical origins of Thanksgiving, while others seek to promote a heart that is thankful to the Lord for all his blessings.

First are 3 really great books that recount the pilgrim’s journey to America:

The Story of Thanksgiving
This is a great little board book that gives a basic overview of the pilgrim story.

Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving
Another great book, this one is for elementary aged children. This follows the story of Squanto’s life. Personally, I didn’t know anything about Squanto, so I found it very informative! Written by Eric Metaxas, the author of the Bonhoeffer biography. If a children’s book is written by a historian I am pretty sure the details are accurate.

Thanksgiving: A Harvest Celebration
A third, excellent historical account of the pilgrims difficult journey and trust in God.

Next I have 3 books that focus on a thankful heart to God:

What Is Thanksgiving?
A good board books for the little ones.

Thank You for Thanksgiving
Another book about being thankful for all God has given, and being thankful for Jesus Christ

Thanksgiving Graces
Finally, one last very cute book about being thankful and willing to share all that you have with others.

I hope that you and your family are able to use some of these books as you prepare your hearts for Thanksgiving! These books can also be found online from the publishers: Ideals Books, Concordia Publishing House, and Tommy Nelson.
