The Scudder Lectures: Kevin Vanhoozer

In 1994, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary inaugurated the C.W. Scudder School of the Prophets Lectureship, the only annual lectureship at any of the six Southern Baptist seminaries to focus specifically on the area of Christian ethics. Honoring the memory of the late C.W. Scudder (1915-1991), the lectureship was established by Scudder’s widow, Lyle, and his daughter, Kathy. Dr. Scudder joined the seminary staff in 1975 as administrator of internal affairs, and in 1978, seminary trustees named him the institution’s first vice president for business and development. Scudder officially retired in 1981 and was named vice president emeritus by the board of trustees. However, he continued to serve beyond retirement as a consultant in planning and development, and for a short time as senior professor of Christian ethics.

Each year, the lectureship brings a guest speaker to the campus to explore the biblical basis for dealing with contemporary social challenges and ethical issues. For the delivery of this year’s Scudder Lectures, Midwestern Seminary is pleased to welcome Kevin J. Vanhoozer, Research Professor of Systematic Theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. Previously he was Blanchard Professor of Theology at the Wheaton College Graduate School (2009-2012) and Senior Lecturer in Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland (1990-98).

About Kevin Vanhoozer:

Dr. Vanhoozer is the author or editor of over twenty books, including The Pastor as Theologian (co-authored with our own Dr. Owen Strachan) and this year’s Pictures at a Theological Exhibition: Scenes of the Church’s Worship, Witness, and Wisdom. Dr. Vanhoozer is married and has two daughters (and seventeen doctoral students).
