The Eternal Generation of the Son

Many in the church today have never heard about the doctrine of eternal generation. But did you know that the early church believed this doctrine was absolutely essential to a biblical understanding of the Trinity and the deity of the Son? They also believed that eternal generation was indispensable to our salvation. If the Son has not been begotten from the Father’s nature from all eternity, he cannot be sent by the Father to redeem sinners in history.

Matthew Barrett, executive editor of Credo Magazine, preached this chapel message at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary on the doctrine of eternal generation, showing from John 1 and 5 how crucial this doctrine is for our salvation. If you enjoy this message, pick up a copy of his book, Simply Trinity: The Unmanipulated Father, Son, and Spirit (Baker, 2021).
