Matthew Barrett: Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God – Credo Conference
Jesus says, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” In this Credo Conference message, Matthew Barrett builds up to Jesus’ words by first asking why God must be simple for the beatific vision to be the source of our happiness in God. He also explains why our natural powers are insufficient for seeing the divine essence, and why we need God’s grace to elevate our mind’s eye to divinity itself. Turning to Jesus, he explains what it means to be pure in heart, and why the whole self must be wholly consecrated to God to one day see his divine essence. Barrett even reflects on Jesus himself, contemplating why our incarnate Savior saw the divine essence in the midst of all his suffering. Finally, Barrett takes us into the heart of the church, asking what means of grace God has given us now to taste and see that the Lord is good, drawing us to the holy Eucharist itself.
