Suffering, so it would seem, appears contrary to our ascent to God, as if a barrier to the Beatific Vision. However, in scripture God ordains suffering as the path by which we will reach full maturity and one day see God. In his Credo conference message, J. Todd Billings shares his own story, his fight against cancer, and how God has been been present to him even in the depths of Sheol, much like Jonah. With deep wisdom on the Christian life, Billings explains why God ordains suffering so that one day we will see God but also be seen by God. We are not only going to behold God but we will be beheld by God. In a moving message, Billings puts the beatific vision before us as our telos, that great hope in which all suffering leads to blessedness in God.
