C.S. Lewis warned that modern life and education were making “men without chests” who lacked ordered desire and rightly formed love. In this lecture delivered at Saint Aidan’s Anglican Church, Dr. Bryan Hollon, president of Trinity Anglican Seminary, uses the Book of Common Prayer to explain how it is meant to order our affections, our loves, in a way that reorients us towards God Himself. What is worthy of our love? What should we love? The Book of Common Prayer is simply the Bible arranged for prayer and worship. Its whole purpose is to turn hearts back to God and then continually reform them week after week in rightly ordered love as it gathers the whole church together to pray God’s own words back to him until those words become the shape of our own hearts. Lewis diagnosed the disease with remarkable precision. During the seminar, Dr. Hollon helps us realize that the cure Lewis pointed to has been sitting in our pew racks the whole time.
