Sinners at the Banquet Table – Eucharist Homily at Trinity Anglican Seminary

Who does Jesus call? When Jesus calls Matthew, he finds him in the tax collector booth, considered by all a sinner and a traitor to his people. And yet Matthew is the very one Jesus shows mercy to and kindness upon kindness. In this Eucharist homily preached at Trinity Anglican Seminary, Matthew Barrett notes that this call has saving power. It is a type of summons, and it is so effective that Matthew leaves his old life behind for a new life with the King.

Who does Jesus come to save? Jesus has come to be the sacrifice of all sacrifices, to offer up himself to God, so that sinners like Matthew can sit at the banqueting table of the Lamb. To approach God as Matthew did, we must know this one thing: we are sinners.

Matthew Barrett is Research Professor of Theology at Trinity Anglican Seminary. He has been appointed the McDonald Agape visiting scholar at Dominican House of Studies and the Thomistic Institute. He is the founder of Credo. He is the author of award-winning books like Simply Trinity and On Classical Theology. Currently he is writing a Systematic Theology with Baker Academic.
