Who was Anselm of Canterbury? Those who have never read Anselm often caricature the medieval theologian as an esoteric logic chopper. A careful read of Anselm, however, reveals a different story. Anselm’s “perfect being” theology was not only the apologetic grounds of his ontological argument, but an entryway into his affirmation of both faith and reason. Anselm’s famous statement – God is “that than which none greater may be conceived” – was no bare proposition, but a declaration of praise. Anselm’s doxological reasoning defined his pursuit of happiness. Matthew Barrett is the editor-in-chief of Credo Magazine, director of the Center for Classical Theology, and host of the Credo podcast. He is professor of Christian theology at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the author of several books, including Simply Trinity, which won the Christianity Today Book of the Year Award in Theology/Ethics. His new book is called The Reformation as Renewal: Retrieving the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church. He is currently writing a Systematic Theology with Baker Academic.
