In this episode of the Credo Podcast, Dr. Graham Tomlin, President of St Mellitus College(opens in new tab), joins Matthew Barrett for a discussion about Blaise Pascal and Tomlin’s new book Blaise Pascal: The Man Who Made the Modern World(opens in new tab). In this conversation, Tomlin argues that Pascal anticipated the modern worldview and the kinds of questions it would raise. Ultimately, Pascal finds that the deepest cause of modern man’s unbelief would not flow from reason, but from his passions. In response, Pascal reminds his readers that the Christian God is a God of love and consolation, an infinite God who fills the infinite emptiness of the hearts and souls of those he possesses. Though God may at times seem hidden, he is also a deeply personal God, one who comes to us in the flesh.
During their conversation, they also discuss Pascal’s wager, his scientific contributions, and the rise of skepticism and rationalism.
